Occupational Therapy Service

Our Occupational Therapists (OTs) carry out assessments and provide services that help people remain as independent as possible in their own homes. This may include identifying equipment and/or adaptations to your home. We can also provide specialist advice.

OTs and Social Care Assessors (SCAs) work with a range of people, including children, who have physical, mental and/or social problems, either as a result of accident, illness or ageing. We are aware of the impact that changes in circumstances can have on individual’s independence and confidence.

You can contact the service if you or the person you are caring for is:

  • finding it difficult to cope with daily activities, or
  • needs equipment or adaptations for the home

We will talk with you to understand what could help you. We may be able to give you advice and information on the phone.

However, if the help you need is more complex, someone from the OT service may come and see you to make sure we give you the best advice. This is called an assessment. If your assessment shows that you need equipment, for example, a mobile hoist and sling, or minor works such as stair rails, then we will provide them free of charge.

You may need major alterations to your home such as putting in a stair-lift or wet-floor shower. You may qualify for a Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) to help pay for the work. This is dependent upon your finances.
