Sensory Inclusion Service - Visual Impairment

Description

Involvement from the Specialist Teacher for Visual Impairment is allocated according to NatSIP (National Sensory Impairment Partnership) guidelines.

Specialist Teachers:

  • See children from point of diagnosis through to leaving school (according to assessed needs).
  • Provide ongoing advice and information about the sensory loss to those involved with the child or young person.
  • Liaise with all agencies, including the voluntary sector, to ensure a cohesive approach.
  • Provide ongoing assessment of the child or young person’s sensory loss and advise accordingly.
  • Provide advice and support to the educational placement (pre-school, nursery, playgroup, school)
  • Provide training as required, individually, in small groups or to whole school.
  • Provide specialist teaching, including Braille, according to individual need
  • Assess and provide specialist equipment for children and young people as determined by need.
  • Request an Environmental Audit for settings and schools who have a pupil with avisual impairment
  • Request a Mobility Assessment, and if recommended, training for a pupil with a visual impairment.

The Sensory Inclusion Service may be able to loan some speciailist equipment, including magnifiers, to be used in schools and settings.

Magnifiers for children and young people to use at home are often loaned through the Low Vision Clinic at the hospital they attend for their eye care.

Additional Referral Information:
Referral to the Sensory Inclusion Service must be made with permission of parents / carers. The child or young person must recently have visited the GP, Ophthalmologist or an optician for an eye test.
Eligibility criteria:
A child or young person must have a diagnosed visual loss or a recognised visual impairment which cannot be corrected by surgery or by wearing glasses.
