Special School Nursing

Description

Special school nurses are based within Park Lane School in Macclesfield.
The onsite nurses provide evidence based, holistic care for all pupils following initial assessment/annual review with parents/carers.

  • They provide individualised care planned to ensure all the pupils’ health needs are addressed in school. This may include a wide range of support and interventions depending on the additional needs of each child, from enteral feeding to support nutrition, epilepsy management, continence assessment and stoma care.
  • They monitor pupils’ health e.g. growth
  • They assess pupils should they become unwell in school.
  • All pupils are offered the relevant vaccinations within the childhood immunisation programme.
  • Any prescribed medication is administered by the nurses in accordance with policy.
  • The nurses advise parents, educational colleagues and other professionals regarding the health needs of their pupils.
  • They also provide annual training for staff in order to facilitate wider experiences for the pupils.
  • They provide health promotion
  • The nurses liaise/work collaboratively with many other health professionals, facilitating community paediatric clinics within the school setting.
  • They have a safeguarding role, providing reports, attending meetings and working as part of a multi-agency team in the best interest of pupils.
  • They work with educational staff to plan and support transition to adult services
